Medical Volunteers International was founded in Germany in 2016 to provide medical care to refugees across Greece. They now work in Athens, Lesbos and Thessaloniki. Since December 2018, we have been supporting the team in Athens.
How do they help?
In Athens the team of volunteer doctors, nurses, paramedics and amazing community translators provide direct medical care to an average of 1200 patients per month in 13 different locations from camps and shelters to squats and day centres.
The team provide primary and emergency care, chronic disease management, referrals to specialist medical, dental, accommodation and legal services, health promotion and first aid training to refugees and other NGOs.
How do we collaborate?
Since December 2018, we have been supporting a monthly stipend for one of the community (refugee) translators. Community translators are often overlooked by donors, yet no organisation can operate without these amazing young men. The monthly payments cover the expenses of being a volunteer including taxi/travel costs to accompany patients to hospitals and appointments, to be able to buy their own sandwich or coffee when the team take a break between clinics, etc. A stipend payment gives these volunteers some dignity back and allows them to continue to help their own people.
